Edmonton has a vibrant nightlife. Beyond the social and cultural contributions, a thriving late night entertainment industry creates thousands of jobs and generates millions of dollars in overall economic impact. Yet, like many cities, Edmonton is not aware of, nor formally recognizes, these economic contributions.

As a result, cities fail to respond to the activity generated by the late night market with appropriate allocation of municipal services. The lack of services may lead to public safety concerns and quality of life complaints, casting a dark light on the industry as a whole.

By participating in this Economic Impact Assessment and collectively contributing financial and employment information there is the opportunity to establish the late night entertainment industry as a legitimate and vital economic engine.

The Economic Impact Assessment

This Assessment was developed in consultation with the Responsible Hospitality Institute (who conducted similar exercises in Austin, Seattle, and New York), the City of Edmonton’s Chief Economist, local industry, and samples from other independent industries.

The 2011 Assessment is directed specifically at late night licensed venues and their patrons as this segment of the overall entertainment/hospitality industry is an easily defined and manageable number. We hope to broaden the scope in the future.

The Assessment has two parts: primary information collected from the licensed venues during the first half of 2011, and secondary information collected from patrons in the fall. Patrons will be asked about their expenditures before and after visiting a venue, including dining, shopping, theatre, cabs, etc.

A sample size of at least 80 venues is required to ensure representation of the various types of venues in all areas of the city. The venue information required includes employment, patron attendance, operational and financial. The collected data is analyzed and a standardized economic formula is used to calculate overall economic impact.

Confidentiality is of paramount importance. Information will only be presented as an Industry whole. Data collected will:

  • ONLY be used for the purpose of this Economic Impact Assessment.
  • Be collected using a survey site endorsed and used by the City of Edmonton.
  • Be securely housed with the City of Edmonton.
